Reading is the foundation of a student's ability to learn at all. This is why it is and has been from our beginning a major focus of what we do.

We start with a battery of assessments to understand what difficulties a struggling reader is experiencing. This could be from a lack of understanding the "code" of the English language -- phonics, or it could be a variety of other factors. 

Community Learning Center tutors work one-on-one or in small groups to address these shortcomings. Because of the direct instruction and isolated nature of the intervention, we are able to move a student up an average of one grade level for every 30 hours of tutoring.

Math is a major problem area for many students. We recognize this and bring the same approach to this subject as we do with reading. 

Our tutors are trained so they understand the underlying key concepts that many students miss which then gives them trouble as they move to higher math. The math assessments we use help us to discover those challenges so they can be addressed.

However, beyond "drilling" math facts, we work with our students to make the subject of math alive and fun. Many students report that this aspect of our program really helps them to make the vital connections they need to succeed.

Study skills and comprehension strategies are another important part of what we offer. Once a student "learns to read" effectively, he then "reads to learn."

Our study methodology is a learning system that produces a greatly improved result when used exactly as taught. American Educator and Humanitarian L. We teach students to identify their own learning gaps, as well as proven strategies to handle these barriers.

Once taught, these students can then monitor their own comprehension and not have to wait "until the test" to see if they understand or not.
